About EV Metrics

Why these calculators?

Electric vehicle ownership comes with a new set of metrics. Instead of MPG, we deal with kWh/100mi or Wh/km. Understanding these numbers is crucial for predicting range and cost.

MPGe (Miles Per Gallon Equivalent) is a measure created by the EPA to compare EVs to gas cars. 33.7 kWh of electricity contains the same energy as one gallon of gas.

EV vs ICE Cost Calculator Notes

Use an ev vs ice cost calculator or ev vs ice calculator by comparing energy cost per distance, maintenance, registration, incentives, and resale. For ev vs ice fuel costs, fuel cost per mile = price per unit ÷ efficiency. This also covers ev vs ice fuel cost, ev vs ice comparison calculator canada, ev vs ice cost savings calculator - drive green, and calculate savings from ice to ev.

Wh/km, Wh/mi, and kWh/100km

Use wh/km to kwh/100km by dividing Wh/km by 10. Use wh/km to wh/mi by multiplying by 1.609, and wh/mi to wh/km by multiplying by 0.6214. For wh/mi convert, keep one direction clear before rounding.

QuestionFormulaExample
3.5 mi/kWh to kWh/100km62.137 ÷ mi/kWh17.75 kWh/100km
convert kwh/100 km to km/kwh100 ÷ kWh/100km15 kWh/100km = 6.67 km/kWh
mi/kwh to kwh/100km62.137 ÷ mi/kWh4 mi/kWh = 15.53 kWh/100km
mi/kwh in kwh/100km62.137 ÷ mi/kWh3.5 mi/kWh = 17.75 kWh/100km

MPGe and Charging Stops

MPGe uses 33.705 kWh as the energy equivalent of one gallon of gasoline. For 144 mpge to kwh/100km, use 2094.7 ÷ 144 = 14.55 kWh/100km. The same method answers mpge in kwh, mpge wh/km, mpge wh/km, and 3m per kwh to mpge.

For ev charging per session and charging stop planner estimates, charging time is energy needed ÷ charger power, then adjusted for taper and losses. Level 1 is slow home charging, Level 2 is typical overnight charging, and DC fast charging is best for road-trip stops.

For watts to kwh or watts to kwh calculator, multiply watts by hours and divide by 1000. A 7,000 W charger for 2 hours adds about 14 kWh before losses. A kwh to kva calculator is different because kWh is energy and kVA is apparent power; you need time and power factor to relate them.
