How is this calculated?
Total CPM = (fuel + maintenance + insurance + tolls + driver pay + depreciation + permits) / total miles Fuel CPM = diesel price / truck MPG Fuel cost = total miles / MPG * diesel price
Example: 10,000 miles at 6.8 MPG and $4.00 diesel has fuel cost of $5,882. Add $8,500 in other costs and total CPM is about $1.44.

What are real-world examples?
| Scenario | Inputs | Result | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Loaded Class 8 | 6.8 MPG, $4 diesel | $0.59 fuel CPM | Before other costs |
| Empty backhaul | 9 MPG, $4 diesel | $0.44 fuel CPM | Fuel only |
| Owner-operator | 10,000 miles, full costs | $1.50-$2.50 typical | Market dependent |
| Urban delivery | Lower MPG, high labor | Higher CPM | Stop-and-go route |
What tips improve accuracy?
- Separate fixed and variable costs to understand break-even loads.
- Use actual IFTA miles and gallons for the most reliable MPG.
- Include unpaid deadhead miles in CPM.
- Track tires and maintenance as cents per mile, not just invoice dates.
- Owner-operator CPM often ranges from about $1.50 to $2.50 before profit.
- Review CPM monthly so fuel price swings do not surprise you.
