Weighted Average Calculator
Use this weighted average calculator when each value does not count equally. It shows the calculation of weighted average, the formula, the total weight, and the steps so the result is easy to check.
Enter grades, prices, scores, ratings, or any numeric values. Separate with commas, spaces, or new lines.
Weights can be percentages, credits, quantities, or importance points. They do not have to add to 100.
Calculation of Weighted Average
The calculation of weighted average gives more influence to values with larger weights. The formula is:
For values 85, 92, and 78 with weights 20, 50, and 30, the weighted total is 85 x 20 + 92 x 50 + 78 x 30 = 8640. The total weight is 100. The weighted average is 8640 / 100 = 86.4.
What Is Weighted Average?
A weighted average is an average where some values count more than others. A simple average treats every value equally. A weighted average is better when the values have different importance, like course credits, assignment weights, survey sample sizes, investment amounts, or product quantities.
| Use case | Value | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Grades | Score | Assignment or exam percentage |
| GPA | Grade points | Course credits |
| Prices | Unit price | Quantity bought |
| Ratings | Rating score | Number of reviews |
Weighted Average vs Simple Average
Use a simple average when each item should count the same. Use a weighted average when one item should count more because it represents more work, more credits, more money, more people, or a larger share of the final result.
If three exams are worth 20%, 30%, and 50%, a simple average can mislead you. The final exam has more influence, so the weighted average is the fairer result.
Weighted Average Calculator FAQ
What is weighted average?
A weighted average is an average where some values count more than others. Multiply each value by its weight, add those products, then divide by the total weight.
What is the calculation of weighted average?
The calculation of weighted average is sum of value times weight divided by sum of weights. In formula form: weighted average = sum(value x weight) / sum(weight).
Do weights need to add to 100 percent?
No. Weights can be percentages, credits, quantities, or points. The calculator divides by the total weight, so 20, 30, 50 gives the same result as 0.2, 0.3, 0.5.
Can I use this for weighted grades?
Yes. Enter each assignment or exam score as the value and its course weight as the weight. The result is the weighted course average for the items entered.
