Frequently asked questions
How do I convert min/mile to min/km?
Divide your min/mile pace by 1.609 to get min/km. A 9-minute mile = 5:35 per km. An 8-minute mile = 4:58 per km. A 7-minute mile = 4:21 per km. Quick mental rule: subtract roughly 1:30 from your mile pace to estimate your km pace.
What pace do I need for a sub-2 hour half marathon?
To run a half marathon in under 2 hours, you need a pace of about 5:41 per km (9:09 per mile). Sub-1:45 needs 4:58/km. Sub-1:30 needs 4:16/km. Most experienced runners aim for slightly negative splits (second half faster than first).
What pace do I need for a sub-4 hour marathon?
A sub-4 marathon needs about 5:41/km (9:09/mile). Sub-3:30 needs 4:58/km. Sub-3 needs 4:16/km. London Marathon's average finisher time is around 4:30, so a sub-4 puts you in the top half.
How fast is a respectable parkrun time?
Average UK parkrun finisher times are around 28-32 minutes (5:36-6:24/km). Sub-30 is a common first goal. Sub-25 (5:00/km) puts you in the top 30%. Sub-20 (4:00/km) is competitive — top 5-10% at most events.
What's the difference between pace and speed?
Pace is time per distance (min/km) — lower is faster. Speed is distance per time (km/h) — higher is faster. They're inverses. Runners use pace because '5:00/km' is more intuitive than '12 km/h'. Treadmills usually show speed; GPS watches show pace.
