Pitch Factor - The Multiplier You Can't Skip

Different Roof Types - Different Calculations
Gable

Hip

Mansard
Mansard is like a gambrel wrapped around all four sides. It uses material heavily, especially at trim and corner details. A planning range of footprint times 1.4 to 1.6 is not crazy, but real orders need plane-by-plane measuring.

Simple gable asphalt shingles usually work with 10% waste. Hip roofs are closer to 15%. A complex roof with valleys, dormers, skylights, and chopped-up additions can need 20% to 25%. Metal panels may only need 5% to 10% because panels are cut to size, but mistakes get expensive. Clay and concrete tile often need 15% to 20% because edge cuts and breakage are real. Slate can be 15% on simple roofs and 25% or more on fussy ones.
