Drywall Calculator - Sheets, Tape, Compound & Screws
Drywall area starts with room wall area, plus ceiling area if selected, minus openings. Divide by sheet area, add waste, and round up because half sheets rarely solve the last wall.
Percent added for cuts, waste, settlement, or field loss.
Cost uses rounded sheet count.

Drywall Sheets Quick Reference
Sheet counts for common rooms using 4 x 8 ft sheets (32 sq ft each), the US default. Walls only, two coats of mud and tape included as task cost reference. Use this for the lumberyard conversation; the calculator above uses your actual sheet size and openings.
| Room (L x W x H) | Wall area | 4 x 8 sheets (walls) | 4 x 12 sheets (walls) | + Ceiling sheets |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 x 12 ft, 8 ft H | 352 sq ft | 12 sheets | 8 sheets | +4 (4x8) or +3 (4x12) |
| 12 x 14 ft, 9 ft H | 468 sq ft | 16 sheets | 10 sheets | +6 (4x8) or +4 (4x12) |
| 16 x 20 ft, 9 ft H | 648 sq ft | 21 sheets | 14 sheets | +10 (4x8) or +7 (4x12) |
| Whole house 1,200 sq ft floor, 8 ft H | ~2,400 sq ft walls + 1,200 ceiling | ~115 sheets | ~75 sheets | included |
| Indian 2 BHK 700 sq ft floor, 10 ft H (false ceiling) | ~1,400 sq ft walls + 700 ceiling | ~70 sheets | ~45 sheets | included |
Numbers include 10% waste. Mud (joint compound) typically runs 1 box (4.5 gal / 55 lb) per 25-30 sheets; tape is 1 roll (250-500 lf) per 18-20 sheets.
How The Sheet Count Actually Works
Drywall math is net wall area divided by sheet area, rounded up. Net area is wall (perimeter x height) plus ceiling (if it gets drywall) minus openings. A 10 x 12 ft room with 8 ft ceiling has perimeter 44 ft x 8 = 352 sq ft of wall. Subtract one door (20 sq ft) and one window (15 sq ft) = 317 sq ft. Divide by 32 sq ft per 4x8 sheet = 9.9 sheets. Add 10% waste = 11 sheets. That is the order.
The trap: rooms with lots of corners, returns, and short wall segments waste more. Each cut leaves an offcut that may or may not work on the next wall. For complex layouts, run a tighter layout sketch on graph paper before ordering. Large sheets (4 x 12) cut waste on long walls but are harder to manoeuvre - two people minimum for ceilings.
Drywall Types and Where Each Goes
Standard / regular (white face)
Living rooms, bedrooms, halls, closets, garages. 1/2 in for walls, 5/8 in for ceilings or where added rigidity helps.
Type X / fire-rated
5/8 in with glass fibres added. Required at garage-to-house walls, around mechanical chases, in multi-family party walls. 1-hour rating per ASTM E119.
Moisture-resistant (greenboard, MR board)
Paper face treated for higher humidity tolerance. Bathrooms (not shower zones), laundry rooms, near sinks. Not for tile substrate in wet areas.
Mold-resistant (purple board, ToughRock Mold-Tough)
Fibreglass face, no paper. Bathrooms in humid climates, basements, kitchens. Replaces greenboard in modern code.
Cement board (HardieBacker, Durock, Wonderboard)
Concrete-based panel for tile substrate in showers, tub surrounds, exterior soffits. Heavy, dusty to cut, but does not swell in water.
Soundproof (QuietRock, USG Sheetrock UltraLight)
Multi-layer constrained-layer panels for theatres, condo party walls, podcast rooms. Two to four times the cost of standard.
Joint Compound, Tape, and Screws - The Other Order
A drywall job is sheets plus three more materials, all of which scale with sheet count, not square footage.
- Joint compound (mud): About 1 pre-mixed bucket (4.5 gallons / 55 lb) per 25-30 sheets. Three coats typical (taping, fill, finish). All-purpose mud works for everything; lightweight and topping compounds sand easier on the finish coat.
- Tape: About 500 ft per 20 sheets. Paper tape (most common) for inside corners and flat seams. Fibreglass mesh tape for repairs and DIY. Outside corners use bead, not tape.
- Corner bead: Metal or vinyl. About 8 ft per outside corner. Sold in 8 or 10 ft sticks.
- Screws: 1-1/4 in coarse-thread for 1/2 in drywall on wood studs; 1-5/8 in for 5/8 in board. About 32 screws per sheet (12 in spacing on field, 8 in spacing on edges). A 5 lb box covers about 80-100 sheets.
- Primer: dedicated drywall primer (PVA) before paint - 1 gallon per 200-250 sq ft of finished wall. Skipping primer makes the paint go patchy where the mud meets the paper.

A solo hanger installs 25-40 sheets per day; a finisher tapes and mudds 100-200 sq ft per day. Three-coat finishing takes 3-5 days for a single bedroom because of drying time between coats.
Common Mistakes
- Buying exact sheet count - 10% waste covers cut-off pieces that do not fit anywhere else.
- Using 1/2 in board on a ceiling - it sags between joists. Use 5/8 in or lightweight ceiling-rated 1/2 in.
- Skipping greenboard or cement board in a bathroom - the standard board eventually grows mold along the studs.
- Forgetting Type X at the garage-to-house wall - permit failure.
- Hanging vertically when horizontal layout saves a row and gives you a smooth seam at hand height.
- Buying too little joint compound and tape - the mud is the cheap part; running out at the end of day 1 stops the job.
- Skipping the PVA primer - paint goes patchy where mud meets paper.
- Using drywall screws on metal studs without fine thread - they strip out and lose grip.
Drywall Calculator FAQ
How many drywall sheets do I need for a 12 x 14 ft room?
Walls only at 9 ft height: perimeter 52 ft x 9 = 468 sq ft. Subtract one door (20) and one window (15) = 433 sq ft. Divide by 32 (4 x 8 sheet) = 13.5 sheets. Add 10% waste = 15 sheets. Add ceiling: 12 x 14 = 168 sq ft / 32 = 5.25 = 6 sheets. Total order: 21 sheets of 4 x 8, or 14 sheets of 4 x 12 (more efficient on long walls).
What thickness drywall should I use?
1/2 in for residential walls. 5/8 in for ceilings (less sag) and Type X fire-rated locations (garage walls, multi-family). 1/4 in flexible for curved walls. 3/8 in for repair only - rarely sold in residential supply.
4x8 vs 4x12 - which is better?
4 x 8 is easier to handle single-handed but creates more seams. 4 x 12 cuts down joint count by 30-40% on long walls and ceilings, but needs two people. Most pros use 4 x 12 on ceilings and long walls; 4 x 8 for closets and short walls.
How much joint compound and tape do I need?
About 1 box (4.5 gal / 55 lb) of joint compound per 25-30 sheets. About 500 lf of tape per 20 sheets. A 20-sheet job uses 1 box of mud and 1 full roll of tape, plus some bead for outside corners.
How many screws per drywall sheet?
About 32 screws per 4 x 8 sheet at 12 in field spacing and 8 in edge spacing. A 5 lb box of 1-1/4 in coarse-thread screws covers 80-100 sheets. For 5/8 in board on metal studs, use 1-5/8 in fine-thread screws.
Do I need moisture-resistant drywall in the bathroom?
Yes for the non-shower walls (greenboard or purple board). In the shower itself, use cement board or a waterproof panel like Schluter Kerdi-Board - not standard moisture-resistant drywall. Code-mandated in most US jurisdictions for wet areas.
Can I hang drywall horizontally?
Yes - and on commercial work, it is the default. Horizontal layout gives one seam at about 4 ft above the floor (easier to finish), and faster panel install. Vertical layout works when walls are tall and there is no seam advantage horizontally. Most US residential is hung horizontally.
How long does drywall taping and finishing take?
A single bedroom: 3-5 days because of drying time. Day 1: hang sheets and apply tape coat. Day 2: fill coat after tape dries. Day 3: finish coat. Day 4: sand and touch up. Day 5: ready for primer. Texture finishes (knockdown, orange peel) add another day.
What is the difference between drywall and gypsum board?
Same product, different names. Drywall is the US term; gypsum board, plasterboard, and Sheetrock (USG trademark) are all the same panel - gypsum sandwiched between paper faces. UK and India favour plasterboard or gypsum board; Asia uses both.
How much does drywall installation cost per square foot?
US installed (board + tape + finish + ready for paint): $2-3.50 / sq ft of finished surface. UK: £25-45 / m². India: ₹90-180 / sq ft. Add 30-50% for high ceilings, curved walls, or Level 5 smooth finish.
