Calculate tons for driveways and parking lots
FAQs
Residential driveways need 2-3 inches (5-8cm) of hot mix asphalt over 6-8 inches (15-20cm) of compacted gravel base. Commercial parking needs 3-4 inches. Heavy truck traffic requires 4-6 inches. Multiple thin lifts (2" each) compact better than one thick layer. Temperature during installation should be above 50°F (10°C) for proper compaction and bonding.
Hot mix asphalt weighs approximately 145 lb per cubic foot (2,320 kg/m³). One ton covers about 80 sq ft at 2 inches thick, or 50-55 sq ft at 3 inches. For a 20×40 ft driveway at 3 inches, you need approximately 4-5 tons. Always verify with your supplier as mix designs vary. Order 5-10% extra for compaction and edge work.
Asphalt costs: USA $80-150/ton material, $3-7/sq ft installed; UK £50-100/tonne; EU €60-120/tonne; Canada C$100-180/ton; Australia A$100-200/tonne. Total installed driveway cost: $2,000-10,000 depending on size and base work. Prep work (grading, base) adds significant cost. Get multiple quotes—prices vary widely by region and contractor.
A proper base is critical for asphalt longevity. Install 6-8 inches (15-20cm) of crushed aggregate base, compacted in 2-inch lifts. Use 3/4" crushed stone or recycled concrete. Compact to 95% density. Poor base causes cracking, rutting, and premature failure. On clay soil, add geotextile fabric between soil and base. Good drainage away from pavement is essential.
Properly installed and maintained asphalt lasts 15-25 years. Sealcoat every 2-3 years to protect from UV and water damage. Fill cracks promptly to prevent water infiltration. Climate affects lifespan—freeze-thaw cycles and extreme heat accelerate aging. Commercial lots with heavy traffic may need resurfacing sooner. Quality installation and maintenance extend life significantly.
Hot mix asphalt requires professional equipment—it arrives at 275-300°F and must be placed and compacted quickly. DIY is only practical for small repairs using cold patch. For driveways, hire professionals with proper equipment (pavers, rollers, trucks). Improper installation causes rapid failure. Base preparation is critical and often where DIY projects fail. Professional work includes warranty.
