Ovulation Calculator

Predict ovulation and fertile days

The Ovulation Calculator identifies your "fertile window"—the days you are most likely to conceive. By inputting your last period and average cycle length, it predicts when you ovulate.

Inputs Explained

  • First Day of Last Period: The day your bleeding started.
  • Cycle Length: The number of days between periods (typically 28 days).

Formula

Ovulation ≈ Next Period - 14 days
Fertile: 5 days before + ovulation day

Fertility Timeline

High fertility 2-3 days before O
Peak Day before O
Egg viable 12-24 hours
Sperm viable Up to 5 days

Complete Guide to Ovulation

Ovulation is the release of a mature egg from the ovary. It is the only time during your menstrual cycle when you can biologically get pregnant. It typically happens 14 days before your next period starts.

How to Calculate (Example)

Let's calculate the fertile window for a 30-day cycle:

  • Last Period (Day 1): January 1st.
  • Next Expected Period: January 31st (Day 1 + 30).

Calculation:

  1. Count back 14 days from the next period: Jan 31 - 14 = Jan 17th (Ovulation Day).
  2. Fertile Window: Sperm can survive 5 days. So fertility starts 5 days before ovulation: Jan 12th - Jan 17th.

Signs That You Are Ovulating

Your body often gives physical clues:

  • Cervical Mucus: Becomes clear, stretchy, and slippery (like raw egg whites).
  • Basal Body Temperature (BBT): Your resting temperature spikes slightly (0.5-1°F) after ovulation.
  • Pain: Some women feel a mild twinge on one side ("mittelschmerz").

Important Considerations

  • Irregular Cycles: If your cycle length varies by more than a few days, calendar calculations may be inaccurate. Use Ovulation Predictor Kits (OPKs) for better accuracy.
  • Timing Sex: For conception, have sex every other day during your fertile window.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ovulation typically happens 14 days before your *next* period starts. In a 28-day cycle, this is day 14. In a 30-day cycle, it is day 16.

Your fertile window is the 5 days leading up to ovulation plus the day of ovulation. You are most fertile on the 2 days before ovulation.

Calculators are estimates based on averages. If your cycles vary widely (e.g., 25 days one month, 35 the next), ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) are more accurate than calendar calculations.

After ovulation, the egg lives for only 12 to 24 hours. If it is not fertilized in that window, it disintegrates and you will have your period about 2 weeks later.

It is possible, especially if you have a short cycle (e.g., 21 days). Ovulation can occur as early as day 7-10 in short cycles, meaning sex just after your period could lead to pregnancy.
