Formula used

Percent solution = solute amount / final solution or mixture amount x 100.

Worked examples

0.9% w/v saline: 0.9 g NaCl in 100 mL final solution gives 0.9 / 100 x 100 = 0.9% w/v.

70% v/v ethanol: 70 mL ethanol in 100 mL final solution gives 70% v/v.

4% w/w mixture: 2 g solute in 50 g final mixture gives 2 / 50 x 100 = 4% w/w.

Why final amount matters

The denominator is the final solution or final mixture amount. For w/v work, dissolve the solute and then bring the final volume to the mark. If you use only the amount of solvent added, the concentration can be slightly wrong because dissolving solute can change the final volume.

If the solute amount is 5 and the final amount is 100 in matching mode units, the answer should be 5%. If the denominator is smaller than 100, the percent may be larger than the solute number.
